Cricket: Results From Day Four of Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week

At long last the sun shone brightly enough for a full days play to be completed on day four of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week 2013.

Clyde Fortuin Century Coca-Cola Khaya Majola WeekPerhaps the most evenly contested match was the Western Province v KwaZulu-Natal clash that saw a very good contest between two sides desperate to showcase their skills.

Western Province batters enjoyed the Smith Oval track at Kearsney College with their wicket-keeper/ opening batsmen, Clyde Fortuin cashing in on some indifferent bowling from KZN who struggled to find their length. Smashing 123 runs of just 115 balls Fortuin notched up a wonderful century that underlines why he is a member of the SA U19 team.

Together with Rondebosch’s Matt Christensen the opening pair put on 128 for the first wicket and help to set up a sizable total of 290/0. The Westville Boy’s High slow left-arm spinner Luke Schlemmer, was the best bowler for KZN claiming 3/36.

KZN went about the run chase with a good deal of zeal, their two openers put on 67 runs before Gareth Wissing departed. Luke Schlemmer enjoyed notching up another half century as did SA U19 player Andile Phehlukwayo who slogged 30 balls for his 50. However a total of five KZN batters failed to reach double figures and that would ultimately be the difference between the two coastal teams. Western Province win by 42 runs.

KZN Inland was again disappointing as they crumbled to 81 runs all out against Mpumalanga after the KZN Inland had done all the hard work to reduce Mpumalanga to 124 all out. Lwandiswa Zuma from Maritzburg College bowled with raw pace to snatch 4/18, but it would be the KZN Inland batters that would be their undoing as they stumbled to a standstill with three batters getting ducks and eight failing to get into double digits.

Grant Roelofsen from KES batted superbly for Gauteng in their run chase of Eastern Province’s total of 211 all out. Roelofsen was looking good to record the second century of the day by a wicket-keeper until he fell caught and bowled to the medium pace of Bradley Bopp for 99 runs! It was left to his KES teammate and SA U19 stalwart Yaseen Valli to steer Gauteng home to victory with a clinical 63 not out.

With results obtained in all the matches played, the selectors had plenty to keep themselves thinking about and it will be interesting to see who they decide should match the SA Schools Team.

Day 3 Report: It was a disappointing day three of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week with only a single match running its course and producing a win for Free State.

Revaldo Moonsamy SA School Sports MagazineSo far it has been a wet Coke week with most matches having to be interrupted due to persistent drizzle and rain which has resulted in the covers being used extensively to protect the pitches.

The heavy mist in Botha’s Hill, where many of the matches have been scheduled to be played on the wickets of Kearsney College, have made it very difficult for bowler and batter alike to adjust to the constant stoppages.

Free State however did make use of a brief halt in the rain to earn a good victory over a strong Northerns outfit who just didn’t click on the day. Needing a mere 108 runs to win Free State almost through away the opportunity but a steady contribution by Grey College’s Christiaan Steyn who slugged a good 45 off a run a ball, saw them through to the win.

The rain is certainly not doing the selectors any favours and the players must be feeling the frustration of not fully being able to showcase their skills in better conditions. There is however still plenty of cricket left to be played and hopefully there will be a respite in the rain for the remainder of the week.

Day Two: Persistent light rain spoiled what looked like a promising days play on the second day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week with several interruptions especially to the matches played at Kearsney College resulted in five matches ending in a draw.

Daniel Griesel from HTS Middelburg was the top scorer of the day with an attacking 109 runs for Mpumalanga against Griquas. The overcast conditions helped the bowlers to get some swing which caused a problem for several of the batters on both sides. Griesel however timed the ball well and hit four huge sixes at the DHS Old Boys Ground. Griqualand were let down by a fragile top order that would have totally crumbled if it wasn’t for the efforts of Gideon Bruwer who compiled a patient half century but besides Aiden Boks sheet anchor role there was little resistance to the penetrative bowling of Mpumalanga.

In a much anticipated match between Northerns and Western Province it was rain that once against robbed us of a victory for either side although Western Province were very close to claiming the win. Jay Stevens from Rondebosch ripped through the Northern’s middle order with an explosive spell to end with 3/13 and stunt the Northerns progress and limit them to a modest 144 all out.

Matt Christensen played a patient 48 runs for WP in their pursuit of the total as the rain stopped and started proceedings. With the Pretoria Boy’s High speedster Dustin Melton enjoying the conditions over head the ball started to sing as Western Province staggered towards the total with several key players falling cheaply. Only 16 runs away from victory the rain was too bad to continue play and the two teams had to settle for the draw.

The day definitely belonged to the batsmen. Apart from Griesel’s ton, there were six half centuries scored. They were by: EP’s Andrew Rushmere (71 v KwaZulu-Natal Inland); Merwe Erasmus (71 for Namibia v SWD); Gareth Wissing (70 for KwaZulu-Natal v Gauteng); Ryan Wallace (71 for KwaZulu-Natal v Gauteng); Gideon Bruwer (55 for Griquas v Mpumalanga) and Revaldo Moonsamy (56 for Northerns v Western Province).

One bowler managed to get a five wicket haul - Wehan Joubert of Mpumalanga got 5/50 against Griquas. Border’s Ngazibini Sigwile took 4/28 against Boland; Analisa Mteto took 4/39 for Eastern Province against KZN inland and Johannes Smit took 4/35 for Namibia against SWD.

Only one team – Namibia has won both its games so far. Gauteng and Eastern Province have managed one win and one draw apiece, while the other big guns – Western Province and KwaZulu-Natal; have had two rained out draws apiece.

The format of the week now changes to limited overs. Wednesday features T20 cricket, with all the sides playing two matches. On Thursday and Friday they play 50 overs a side matches.

Day One : Under gloomy skies in KwaZulu-Natal the 2013 edition of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week got underway and for the most part the pending rain did not cause too much disruption to the first day’s play.

The top scorer of the day was Christopher Marrow of SWD who look set to score the first century of the week until a combination of rain and bad light halted his progress at 86 not out in their match against Mpumalanga.

Rondebosch's all rounder Daayaan Galiem dismantled the Boland batting lineup with destructive spell which yielded 4/13 as Boland were skittled out for a paltry 46 runs. Western Province who have a powerful team at CCKM 2013 sent out a strong message that they are one of the teams to beat with a comfortable win.

Gauteng also enjoyed a great start to their campaign with St. Stithians well represented in the plays of the day. In their match against a lacklustre KZN Inland team, Marques Ackerman struck an undefeated 51 whilst his Saints team mates Kagiso Rabada and Nicholas Scholtz took 3/14 and 3/7 respectively to set up a crushing victory.
