Cricket: Results of Day Four of CSA U15 Week

There are two names that keep on cropping up after each day’s play at the CSA U15 Cricket Week and day four was no different. Dean Foxcroft from Northerns and Wiaan van Niekerk from Griquas.

Foxcroft once again was amongst the runs and finished with yet another “not out” as he struck a 34 ball 43 runs to go along with his unbeaten century of yesterday. The Menlopark player, who is in the process of captaining a formidable Northerns side, once again brushed aside a strong Gauteng team to claim yet another victory. Foxcroft was well supported by Thabo Motaung and Josh van Heerden who both recorded fifties.

Wiaan van Niekerk virtually singlehandedly crushed the whipping boys of the week Limpopo with a dominant performance with bat and ball. Van Niekerk scored 93 runs and took 3/13 with the ball to help set up a crushing 189 run win. The Swedi High batter has proved to be an effective all rounder during the week with some match winning performances for Griquas.

Eastern Province were too good for Western Province in what promised to be a tighter affair but the left hander from Graeme College Nicholas Zimmerman came good in the middle order for EP to score a brisk 68 to set up a winning total for his team.

There were good wins for KZN Inland, where Hilton College’s Gavin Morris steered his team in a captain’s knock to victory, and Boland who thumped KwaZulu-Natal by 9 wickets.

Day 3: Menlopark’s Dean Foxcroft was in the runs once again for Northerns and this time he managed to score a mammoth 155 not out in nearly a run a ball against a Border attack that struggled to contain the attacking right hander.

Foxcroft is in the process of putting together a memorable U15 CSA Week and is yet to be dismissed in his last three innings having already scored an unbeaten 44 and 61 previously. However his heroic effort still wasn’t enough to bring about a win and Northerns had to settle for a draw with Border who hung in there gamely thanks to the efforts of Nathan Roux who top scored for his team on 43.

The Free State v Griquland match also saw another centurion in the form of Free State’s Chris Schreuder who scored a quick fire 123 runs which included three massive sixes. Griqualand battled for the victory tenaciously with Noord-Kaap’s Simon Muller looking good until he was bowled by Gert Koegelenberg for a well struck 89 and Free State were able to cling on for the win.

Matt Breetzke for Grey High and EP was bitterly disappointed not to get to three figures after he was caught on 99 in what was a patient innings from the young stroke maker. Fifties by Jimmy Sholto-Douglas and Grey High’s Jarryd Lookwhy set up a winning target that KZN were never going to be able to reach.

DAY 2: The cream of South Africa’s U15 cricketers tested their skills in the 20/20 format of the game with Northerns, Eastern Province, Border and Mpumalanga winning both their matches played.

Dean Foxcroft from MenloPark had a very successful day for Northerns scoring 44 not out and 61 not out in his two chances at the crease to help steer Northerns to a couple of impressive wins over Boland and North West . It was a good bounce back to form for the boys from Pretoria after suffering a heavy defeat on day one to Western Province.

Western Province who have fielded a powerful side looked dominant in their match against North West but the wheels came off against Boland who beat them by 6 wickets. Mika Ekstrom was once again in the wickets taking 3/12 but it was not enough to keep Boland at bay.

Matt Breetzke of Grey High School got his campaign off to a solid start with a 33 and 34 runs in his two matches. Opening the batting for Eastern Province Breetzke got his team off to a great start each time and they were good value in their win against Gauteng which came off the last ball of the match.

At the end a draw was a result on a wicket that rewarded good stroke play.

Mika Ekstrom from Wynberg Boy’s High also put on a master class with his seamers with a return of 5/5 in their match against Northerns who were bundled out cheaply for 96 runs.

Paul Habib of KES rocked KwaZulu-Natal with brilliant opening spell that had the KZN side on the ropes from the start. Habib removed the top four batters without scoring to finish with 4/9 and set up a big win for Gauteng.
