(Stellenbosch 20 February 2011) The Standard Bank Schools Pro20 Challenge in Stellenbosch ended in sensational style on Sunday, when it required a Super Over to separate victors Hoërskool Waterkloof from Hoërskool Noordkaap.

Waterkloof, playing in the tournament for the first time, reached the final with an emphatic victory over Grey High in the morning match, while Noordkaap – who finished last in the 2010 tournament – beat Wynberg Boys High to go through.

Noordkaap won the toss and batted first in the final.

They lost early wickets, but Vorster Maritz smashed six sixes in making an undefeated 50 off 35 deliveries.

Noordkaap ended their innings on 127/7.

Daniel Ferns, Ruben Claassen and Janke Beunink took two wickets each while JP Kok ran Jaco Buys out.

Man of the match Kok and captain Frederik Andersen got Waterkloof off to a good start with an opening partnership of 45.

Aiden Brooker made an important breakthrough when he had Andersen caught by Xanders Pitchers for 22 in the ninth over, and Waterkloof’s run chase went into a bit of a wobble.

Brooker took two more wickets, dismissing Dane Aucamp (2) and Jovaun van Wyngaart (5).

But Kok played superbly, hitting five boundaries and two sixes to take his score to 74 off 62 balls before he was caught by Maritz off Buys in the 13th over.

Waterkloof appeared to be losing the battle, and with three balls to go, needed another 11 runs to secure victory.

Sean Phillips hit a boundary, leaving Waterkloof needing seven runs off two balls.

Patrick Kruger bowled Daniel Rossouw off the penultimate ball, and it appeared all over for the Pretoria team, but Phillips showed big match temperament with a six off the last ball to level the scores.

This meant that the match had to go to Super Overs.

Waterkloof batted first, and Noordkaap celebrated when Kok was caught by their captain, Diego Rosier, off GM Bruwer for two.

However, Van Wyngaart stepped up to the plate, hitting seven from two, while Andersen hit four from two.

Waterkloof ended their Super Over with 13/1. Superb bowling by Van Wyngaart ensured that Noordkaap were kept in check, and they were only able to make 3/1.

Waterkloof’s victory ensured that the trophy remained in Titans’ territory, as the first Challenge was won by Menlo Park.

Andersen was elated by his team’s victory. “We were lucky that we had played a super over before, against Affies,” he said.

“That experience helped us to keep our nerve – we knew what we had to do.” Rosier said though Noordkaap were disappointed that having come so far, they had not been able to win.

“But I’m very proud of what we achieved,” he said. “No-one expected us to do so well – we came last last year, but we have shown what we can do.”
