Cricket: Potch Volkies Upset KES to Win T20 Final

Potch Volkies is the Highveld Lions’ T20 champion after they have beaten the Gauteng champion, KES, convincingly with 4 wickets at Senwes Park on Tuesday 10 February.

The Highveld Lions consist of Gauteng and Northwest.

Volkies won the toss and sent KES in to bat. KES got off to a flying start and were 44 without loss after just 3 overs. David Crowther turned the tide with the first ball of the fourth over by removing Shane Daldswell for 27 runs and conceding only two runs in that over.

From then on Volkies bowled brilliantly and supported their bowling with excellent fielding. KES managed in the end to reach 155 with the loss of 6 wickets. Main contributors with the bat were Tony de Zorzi with 33 and Naps de Beer with 28 runs.

The two Crowther brothers were outstanding with the ball with David taking 2 wickets for 21 runs in four overs and Cobus taking 2 wickets for just 19 runs in his 4 overs with his legbreaks.

Volkies had a dream start to their innings by compiling 94 runs before losing the first wicket of Ruan von Abo (51) in the tenth over. The captain of Volkies, Jandre Dreyer, played a monumental innings and kept things together for Volkies. While wickets were tumbling around him, he played a superb knock.

With the first ball of the 18th over Volkies reached the target of 156 with 6 wickets down. Dreyer was undefeated with 77 runs from 48 balls. Charles Louw hit the winning run and ended on 10 not out.

Volkies surely caused a major upset and showed that cricket in the rural areas is of a high standard. Their performance in the National T20 championship in Stellenbosch will be followed with great expectancy and hopefully they can stir a few of the ‘big names’ in SA School’s cricket.
