Cricket: Mighty Rearguard by tailenders save Bosch Blushes

Written by  Rob Dalrymple

RBHS v Paul Roos Match report:

Brick WallRondebosch travelled out to Stellenbosch on Saturday and was met by overcast skies and an under-prepared wicket that was not conducive to good cricket. Bosch elected to bowl and despite a steady stand by the Paul Roos openers, managed to gain the ascendency during the morning session. The only Paul Roos batsman to go past 20 was Scholtz who, batting at number 6, used his powerful frame to throw the willow at the ball. His 60 enabled the hosts to get to 161 all out. Pick of the bowlers was Dayyaan Galiem with his 4 for 39 and he was well-supported by Kay Stevens who toiled hard for his 2 for 29.

Paul Roos began their defence in magnificent fashion – the tall stature of their opening attack able to make the most of the substandard pitch. Justin Dill (4 for 36) in particular extracted both movement and uneven bounce and the Bosch batsmen had no answer as they slumped to 66 for 9 shortly after tea.

This brought Junaid Dawood to the crease to join Jay Stevens and the pair then produced one of the most remarkable rearguard actions ever witnessed. 39 overs later the partnership was still unbroken and the match had been saved – 75 runs had been scored by the pair although this was largely irrelevant. Modern language usage has somewhat undermined the value of superlatives and I find it difficult to find words which accurately reflect the momentous effort of these two men – suffice to say that I felt truly privileged to have been witness to it. Well done Jay and Junaid!
