Hockey Report: Maritzburg College v Kearsney College

1st XI vs Kearsney College Venue: Masons Astroturf (Kearsney College) . College were back to full strength for this "top of the KZN Table" encounter at the newly laid yet very bumpy water-based surface.

The home team had done well domestically after having had a
successful Easter tour to Malaysia prior to the start of their season, and remaining unbeaten
against local opposition. College expected a tough encounter and when Kirsten broke through four
tackles to score what was felt to be a very soft goal in the fourth minute, the College XI came to
life, and Kearsney retreated back into their half of the field to defend a lead that they would hold
onto until a minute before half time. This would also prove to be almost the last entry that
Kearsney would have into the College circle for the remainder of the game. Such was College's
dominance from a possession and territory point of view. After having battled to stop the first
corner that wobbled out to the top of the circle, Berichon pushed a second out to Bechet who
stopped cleanly for Glutz who buried the shot with power and accuracy, leaving Rennie in the
Kearsney goal well beaten. After half time College came out firing on all cylinders and, despite
numerous opportunities, they waited until the 52nd minute before Glutz converted College's fifth
penalty corner of the game to put his team in front. In the 58th minute a good build up involving
Turnbull and Glutz saw the latter set Wanliss up who put the game beyond any doubt, and in so
doing sent Kearsney to their first defeat of the domestic season and their first on their new surface.
In this game College had dominated every aspect and the final score line of 3-1 in their favour
certainly flattered the opposition.

Half Time Score: 1-1 Full Time Score: 3-1
Goalscorers: G. Glutz (2); N. Wanliss
