Hockey Match Report- Queen's College vs Selborne

In a match played in hot Queenstown conditions, Selborne had the better of what is always a tough encounter against one of the top Border hockey schools to emerge with what was their best away win over Queen’s for some years.

Selborne were on top for most of the first half and went into the interval looking comfortable with a 2-0 lead after Keoghan Penhall netted a penalty stroke followed by another Penhall goal from second-phase play after a penalty corner.

Maybe too comfortable. The visitors let their defensive disciplines slip early in the second half which resulted in 2 errors around the circle both of which were punished with excellent finishes by Queen’s. All of a sudden, 2-2.

Selborne then pulled themselves together and re-established their pattern. The lead was regained when Lutho Lwana scored with a cracking shot after good build-up by Matt Dewar and Neshu Mangema. The result was put beyond doubt when Lwana converted a penalty stroke after he was taken down by a Queen’s defender in front of goal. Final score 4-2.

It was a satisfying victory for Selborne in their first Derby Day match of the season against worthy opponents who always provide one of the hardest tests of the hockey year.
