Hockey: Match Report- Selborne vs Cambridge

Written by  Tony Godding

On the 29th May, 2015, the Xerox Selborne College 1st XI were expecting a stern challenge from a much-improved Cambridge team which has had a run of good results of late. And so it proved. It was an extremely well-contested encounter in which neither side ever gained a clear advantage.

After both teams had begun at a good pace, Selborne opened the scoring after 10 minutes when they were awarded a penalty-stroke which was well converted by Njabulo Toni. This did not deter Cambridge who continued to give as good as they got for the rest of the period. Selborne missed a good opportunity to go further ahead late in the half when a 2-on-1 on the last defender was not efficiently executed. Cambridge also had some dangerous raids which tested the Selborne defence, in which Keoghan Penhall was prominent.

The second half was mainly a midfield battle with very few circle entries from either side. Selborne again missed a chance to extend their lead when another 2-on-1 on the goalkeeper was squandered.

But with 50 seconds remaining, the home side made a tactical error when, instead of taking the ball to the corner, the Selborne strikers opted to go for goal. The ball was lost, enabling Cambridge to launch a counter-attack and with seconds remaining, they were awarded a penalty-corner which was taken after the final hooter. A good variation resulted in a deflection over the Selborne keeper.

Cambridge were justifiably delighted with the draw, which made it the first time in many years that they had not lost this fixture. They thoroughly deserved this result through their impressive work-rate and some outstanding defence. It may be that Selborne were not at their best, but that does not detract from the fact that 1-1 was a very fair outcome of a spirited encounter.
