Canoeing: Maritzburg College Win KZN Title for 8th Time

Maritzburg College won the Graeme Pope-Ellis Inter-schools Floating Trophy taking the KZN Inter-schools Title for the eighth consecutive year.

 Enduro 2014 1The title was decided at the Inter-schools Enduro at Camps Drift when Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse went head to head coming into this, the last event of the season, on equal points. Brandon Orpwood and Jarryd Gibson crossed the line in the winning College team with Damon Stamp and Louis Hattingh to clinch the KZN Schools trophy for College. The Enduro consists of teams of four. The Maritzburg College U18 team placed 1st overall and the U14 team also won their category.  

It was a fitting end to a successful season where Maritzburg College won the trophies for the winning school at the Fish River SA Championships, the KZN Schools River Championships and the SA Schools Sprints. Only the Duzi Canoe Marathon school title, which was won by their rivals Michaelhouse, eluded them. Over and above these results, two of Maritzburg College’s paddlers achieved great results at National and International levels.

Louis Hattingh, together with Jean van der Westhuyzen from Michaelhouse, won gold in the U18 K2 category at the ICF World Marathon Championships held in Oklahoma City. Louis won bronze in the U18 K1 category. Louis also competed in the ICF Canoe Sprint Junior andU23 World Championships in Hungary, winning the B-final.

Brandon Orpwood represented South Africa at the World Slalom Championships and placed 33rd overall. He also represented South Africa at the Africa Youth Games and placed 2nd overall.
