Sports Review: Collegiate v DSG

The annual Girls’ School derby between Collegiate and DSG took place in Grahamstown on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 May 2013.

The tennis girls took to the court on Friday afternoon and saw Collegiate taking the upper hand and winning all 15 matches. Charlotte Rubidge had a closely contested singles game and Ashley Farrington and Alice Godlonton almost came away with a win in their doubles match.

On a sunny, warm Saturday morning, the great display of sport on the netball courts and hockey fields was a treat for all the spectators. Thirteen netball teams and fifteen hockey teams were involved in the action and there were many exciting, nerve-jangling, closely contested matches. The DSG netball teams won five, lost five and drew three of the matches and the hockey teams won seven, lost seven and drew one of the hockey matches. The DSG 1st team netball girls found themselves six goals behind at one stage, but they played some great netball to come back and Collegiate and DSG were neck and neck for a large portion of the game. The DSG team managed to claim the winning goal in the final ten seconds of the match, with a final score of 27-26. In the 1st team hockey match, Collegiate applied the pressure in the first half, forcing the DSG goal keeper (Asanda Biyana) to make many crucial and amazing saves. However, the DSG team gained the upper hand in the second half, playing some great hockey to hold onto the 1-0 victory in the end.

The weekend’s fixtures and results showed great competitiveness and sportsmanship amongst the schools and all the teams involved.
