National Rugby Results & Reports: 22 May

We are moving into the business end of the season and the majority of the top teams are enjoying good success as the team get fitter and the hours of training is finally paying off. There were all the usual suspects winning this weekend but a few matches stand out: Westville v Maritzburg College, Monument v Affies, Bishops v Wynberg, Gimmies v SACS and Boishaai v Landou.

Maritzburg College are in the process of enjoying a rejuvenated season and have recorded some superb results this year but there was always the question mark of whether they deserve to be in the Top 20 or if they can claim to be the second best team in KZN.  In a pulsating match against local rivals Westville and in front of over 4000 spectators the two teams were locked at 20 points a piece by the time the final whistle went in what was a great advertisement for school rugby.

Wynberg still punch drunk after their 101- 0 drubbing by Paarl Gym managed to put up a better fight against high flying Bishops yet Bishops were always in control and should hold onto their second place ranking having put away their neighbours 38-20.

Staying in the Cape there was also the Boishaai v Boland Landbou encounter which saw the boys from Paarl comfortably running out victors 38-17. So much was expected from Boland and they still possess the ability to be giant killers and punch above their weight but this result could see them slipping to the bottom of the SASS Top 20 rankings.

Affies have had no rest from big opponents and the match against Monnas promised to test the big Pretoria outfit again who have probably biten off more then they can chew in a relentless schedule of matches. Monnas have a very strong backline and were able to stretch the Affies defence several times at will. Both sides managed to score 4 tries but too many wasted opportunities by Affies meant that they would lose for the second time in a week. Final score 42-38.
