New Feature: Michaelhouse

The educational programme of any top school should reflect a balance between academic, cultural, environmental and sporting activities. Life for any boy at Michaelhouse takes place daily at the meeting point of the time, facilities and encouragement to discover new sporting abilities and passions.

The full boarding environment engenders an ingrained respect for team dynamics amongst our boys and it is this unique aspect of the school which has paved the way for more than 160 Old Boys representing 17 countries in 48 different sporting codes on the tracks and playing fields of word sport.

In an era where schools have necessarily had to niche themselves as overtly academic environments, or sports academies, or schools with a distinctive cultural element, Michaelhouse manages to remain a truly holistic school where no single pursuit comes at the expense of other interests or areas of development. The fully resident staff complement are uniquely positioned, not just as teachers, but as coaches, confidants and mentors to encourage Michaelhouse boys to become the very best that they can be.

The fourth cornerstone allowing a small school like Michaelhouse to perennially punch above its weight across sporting disciplines is a vibrant strength and conditioning programme which is timetabled into boys’ afternoon schedules. The results of this initiative have been ground breaking and include dramatically reduced lists of boys who are forced to miss fixtures due to injury and fatigue at the same time as measurably reducing recovery periods. Perhaps the most encouraging side effect of the programme is a steady increase in average academic grades since the introduction of the programme in early 2018.

For most boys, the lofty dream of an international podium finish, or a world cup medal will be unattainable ideals. While Michaelhouse’s sports programmes and facilities will continue to provide the inspiration and the potential launch pad for the few who are determined and talented enough to go all the way, the objective remains to foster a healthy life-long interest in participation and a respect for balanced, healthy lifestyle decisions.
