Soccer: DHS Roast College to Win Raw Cup!

The Raw Cup is a football trophy that the two oldest schools in the KZN province - Durban High School and Maritzburg College - compete for on a yearly basis.

Raw Cup 2014This cup came about in 1889 and moved around the province before the Archivist at DHS, Mr J.J Oddy persuaded the owner of the Raw Cup at that time, to donate it to DHS so that the two old rival schools – DHS and College – could compete for it.

The first eagerly awaited encounter after the last football match played over a hundred years ago, took place at DHS in 2008, which was won by Martizburg College, however DHS took the win the following two years after that. College then made a comeback and took the win the following two years after that. In 2013, DHS won the trophy once again and this year, after two second half goals were scored within three minutes of each other, DHS were in the driving seat against Maritzburg College.

In the 59th minute, DHS came very close to scoring a fourth goal, when Sibonelo Mkombe’s snap shot from close range smacked against one of the uprights and rebounded back into play, however with a score of 3-1 to DHS, the win was quite clear and DHS celebrated their triumph of the 125-year-old Raw Junior Challenge Cup once again!
