Soccer: Brendon Konki a Future SA Great in the Making

South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs’ forwards have struggled of late to consistently find the back of the net with an astonishing 15 goals scored in 30 matches. At times watching a local match can be one big yawn.

Brendon Konki Kaizer Chiefs and Heronbridge However this may well be a thing of the past if Grade 10 learner from HeronBridge College, Brendon Konki can continue to keep his performance at the current rate.

Konki is currently playing for Kaizer Chiefs Under 19 team and the young striker has already got people believing that he could reach the highest levels in the sport.

In 2013 the 17 year old netted 40 goals in 31 matches for the Chiefs U17 team and this year in the Chiefs U19 side he has found the net 14 times in eight matches for the Amakhosi.

Konki did not suddenly become a prolific striker, he started playing football at the age of three but was soon becoming the top goal-scorer wherever he was playing from primary school to high school.

“Soccer grew up in me because I started playing at a young age and I have never looked back,” he says, explaining why he chose soccer above other sports he has participated in, such as golf and athletics.

His most exciting football moment came when he was selected to play in the COPA America Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil back in 2007 when he was only 11 years old. “I scored two brilliant goals in the finals to win the silver cup. I can’t get that trip out of my mind; in fact, I always feel that if I could achieve that in Brazil, nothing will stop me in becoming great,” Konki adds.

Brendon’s goal is to break into the Kaizer Chiefs first team soon and go on to play for South Africa and by all accounts he is well on his way to achieving even more on the world stage.

Brendon was recently selected as 1 of 150 players to play at the African Finals and he impressed so much at the African Finals that he was one of only two African players selected to participate in the Global Showcase that will take place at the Nike Academy in England on 24th November 2014.

If he is selected to form part of the academy he will be expected to spend a year with the academy starting in January, 2015. He will then spend a year competing against the likes of Barcelona, with the hope of being scouted.

Brendon Konki is an exceptional talent who possesses phenomenal speed and has been clocked doing the 20 meter sprint in just 2.66 seconds which rates him as world class.

It is clear that in Brendon Konki, South Africa has unearthed a rare talent and the last words from the young striker underlines his passion to achieve at the highest level,

“If I were a professional player, I would be: Cristiano Ronaldo! In 2013, I finished as top goal scorer for my team with 40 goals, including six hat tricks in the season. If Ronaldo can do it, I can do it, too. There’s no doubt in my mind.”
