Swimming: Reuben Schoeman Open Water Champ

Glenwood Grade 9 swimmer, Reuben Schoeman, is fast becoming one of the most talked about open water swimmers in the country and many are tipping him to reach the highest levels in the sport.

Reuben Schoeman swimmerHis passion for the open water events started with he was just nine years old and he has become a familiar face at the open water events around the country since then. Yet it was in 2013 that Reuben took his chance to announce his arrival on the open water stage, when he swam to a Midmar Mile first in the U13 & 30 and above event. This year Reuben competed for the first time in the main event where he was in the illustrious company of Chad Ho who was the eventual winner.

Swimming with some of the elite distance swimmers in the country, the young Reuben Schoeman acquitted himself well to grab a top 10 finish in a race that saw him holding his own against some very experienced open water swimmers.

There was no rest for Reuben after the Midmar Mile as he participated in the Open Water Nationals 5 Km swim where he finished in second place in the U16 category.

The future looks very bright for the young open water champion who is currently ranked in the top two in the country and stands a great chance to participate in the FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships in Eilat, Israel from 28-30 August 2014.
