The weather played its role in what turned out to be a top class tennis event, in which some of South Africa’s leading players were seen in action.

For the 18th consecutive year, Kearsney College at Botha’s Hill will host the country’s top tennis playing schools at a three-day invitation festival this weekend (24-26 May, 2013).

Not since the days of Amanda Coetzer has South Africa been able to proudly proclaim that it has a female tennis player to write home about. The allure of the USA and the institutional indifference to developing young talent has meant that youngsters either fall through the proverbial cracks into obscurity or seek greener pastures.

On Wednesday, 4 May 2011, the Glenwood 1st Tennis Team travelled to Johannesburg for the annual Wayne Ferreira Tennis Tournament, hosted by Parktown Boys' High School. The 8 competing schools were divided into two pools of 4 teams each, with each pool playing a Round Robin to determine the top two schools in each pool. Glenwood's first match was played on Thursday morning against last year's winners, Stellenbosch  High. The game was a tough one, made worse by the absence of Jeandré Hoogenboezem, last year's School Champion, due to a hockey injury.

Stefan Fortmann - SA's Young Tennis Ace

The older among us will remember a time when South African tennis held its own on the world stage. Amanda Coetzer, the gutsy Free Stater who competed with the best on the women's circuit; Wayne Ferreira breaking into the men's top ten and South Africa-born IMG_4359Kevin Curren reaching a Wimbledon final. The last ten years have seemingly spelt the end to South Africa's claim of being a tennis power on the world stage. Unable to cope with Russian professionalism, American brute force or European panache, the future of South African tennis looked look-warm to say the least.
